Ruth Roman was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, the youngest of three daughters of Lithuanian-Jewish parents Mary Pauline (Gold) and Abraham Roman. At the age of five the carnival barker father died and left her mother no option but to be a cleaning girl and waitress to feed the family. Ruth went to school in Boston's poorest tenement area. Her school was closed in two years, to go into acting. This path was fraught with challenges. After landing a gig as a model in New York as a model for a detective magazine she had a difficult time trying to find work for stage. The next position she was offered was a "hat check" girl for a nightclub until she decided to quit and moved back to Boston. In Boston, she worked to make the ends meet by working with her ushering duties throughout the day, and working at night with the New England Repertory Company, her first regular acting gig. She studied drama in The Bishop-Lee Theatre School and graduated.
